I know different people like to do different things on the 4th. As kids we used to go to the "VP Fair" in St. Louis (now Fair St. Louis). As we got older we spent time at friends / family - usually shooting off fireworks or just hanging out and spending quality time together. Now that our kids are past toddler stage, we're starting to change how we spend this holiday (in bed by 9 lol). We do something a little different every year.
This year we're going to get away from it all and go spend the weekend on the family's 150 acre farm south of here near Ava, MO. It will just be myself, Nicole and our girls. Maybe a few fireworks on the 4th, but mostly just relaxation, BBQ, and backyard games. This might just end up being the best 4th yet.
So what do you have planned this weekend?

Try asking again after the Holiday gets here. I still have another day in the table top booth, working it 11 a.m. until at least 8 p.m. tomorrow. Then it's a 3 hour drive back to Louisiana, before I can begin my weekend.
Hopefully no fireworks this year. Now that our boys are grown, that has become much less important, while the food & beverages have gained in popularity. They will come to the farm for fried catfish, a shrimp boil (shrimp, potatoes, whole corn, sausage, carrot & onion) & grilled lobster tails. Besides wine & beer, I make a killer sangria.
Do you provide them shrimp peelers? I've got one customer that swears by them for all-you-can-eat boiled shrimp night. The restaraunt may have to ban them.
Nope. I use the E-Z Peel shrimp, even when boiling. Can't beat having the vein already removed & the shell opened for easy peeling. I have found that, besides the convenience, the seasoning gets into the shrimp better than using "conventional" shrimp. In the past, I would have to pretty much overcook the shrimp to get the level of seasoning I prefer... but not now.
This is going to be a busy and photography-filled weekend! Lots of local events that beg for a camera.
FRIDAY - Work, then head up to see a Obon Festival at a Japanese temple. First the food booths open, then there is a service, followed by a lantern ceremony. This is where candle lit lanterns are carefully carried down to the beach, led by the obosan (priest) with the congregation following. At the beach, the helpers load the lanterns onto bamboo rafts, and take them out onto the waters, letting them float on the (hopefully) calm waters. This is all to honor the deceased, and it is a very beautiful and moving service, with chanting and music. After that, the dancing begins!
SATURDAY - Early morning church White Elephant Sale, followed by small town parade, then the island rodeo! Saturday evening I have two BBQs to attend, one in our neighborhood and the other at the house of a friend. Looks like this is also a food weekend, not that I'm complaining.
SUNDAY - Church bazaar, and maybe some yardwork or else go jump in the ocean. I'll decide then.
No local fireworks, just up in Lahaina and not worth driving up to see. Local small fireworks sales are down, and actually I'm happy about that. I don't really like small fireworks, they are just a lot of noise and smoke and really the kids seem to get bored with them after the first hundred or so.
